FAQ

The questions people ask

all the time…

No, and please don't. Most communities start with one floor, one cul-de-sac, or one committee. When enough neighbors are using it, the board joins because it's already where the conversations are.

No. Whoever starts the community pays for it at first, from $29/month on the Neighborhood tier, and you can split that with a few neighbors if you like. When the board takes over, billing moves to the HOA. We handle the switch, and nothing about your community changes.

It's a real, mobile-friendly web app. Nothing to download from an app store: residents open it in the browser they already use. Native iOS and Android apps are on the roadmap, but the web works on every device your community already owns.

Most property-manager portals are billing systems with a forum bolted on. neighbors.fyi starts from "what would residents actually open every day," and grows back into operations from there.

Communities are private by default. Residents see what their role allows. Board-only channels stay board-only. Every admin action is logged. We don't train models on your messages, sell your data, or surface ads. Your dues pay for the product.

Honestly, because every community we host costs us real money. Each one has its own database, its own deployment, and its own backups, plus the people-cost of keeping the product safe, supported, and improving. An unlimited free tier means subsidizing every community indefinitely, which is the kind of thing that quietly kills good products three years in. We'd rather charge from $29/month, stay around, and ship features. The 14-day free trial gives you enough time to actually invite neighbors and see if it sticks before any card gets charged.

Yes. Import your resident roster from a CSV with a guided column-mapping wizard (export it from whatever you use today), and bring your documents over with bulk drag-and-drop upload. If you want a hand getting set up, just ask.

Yes. Pick your community's color palette and light or dark mode, and the whole app follows: dashboard, chat, map, and every resident's view.

Minutes, not weeks. It's fully self-serve: start your trial, your community spins up automatically, and you can go from signing up to inviting your first neighbors in under 10 minutes. No demo call, no sales cycle, no waiting on us.

You own your community's data, always. Export your member roster and compliance summary as CSV whenever you like, and every resident can download their own data from their profile. Need a fuller export of your community's records? Ask us and we'll put one together for you.

Cancel any time from the admin portal. Your community keeps running through the end of the billing period, then enters a 14-day grace window where you can reactivate with one click and nothing changes. After that window we take an archival backup, delete the live database, and hold the backup for 12 months so a future board can still restore it. Export what you need before then: roster and compliance CSVs from the admin area, and ask us if you want a fuller export. You own your community's data, full stop.

Because we automate the whole thing: signature pad, PDF generation, email delivery, single source of truth. Your HOA sets its own fee and keeps it. The fee is collected on your community's own Stripe account, the same one residents use for dues, so the money flows to you, not us. We add a small, transparent processing fee on top for running the automation. The buyer still pays far less than the $150 to $300 most platforms charge, and your association keeps what's rightfully its own.

From the profile page → "Data & account requests." Residents can download a ZIP of everything we hold about them (one-click, self-serve) or request permanent account deletion. Deletion requests are confirmed in-app by typing DELETE in a confirmation field, then a human reviews before executing. We respond within 30 days (45 in California) per the Privacy Policy. The full flow is documented at /academy/data-rights.

Every piece of resident-authored content (chat messages, DMs, marketplace listings, vendor reviews, comments, pets, photos) has a small flag icon. Residents click it to file a report with a reason and optional note. Reports go to the community's admins in an anonymous review queue: admins see the content + aggregate history stats but not the reporter's or author's name by default. Reveals are audit-logged. Admins can remove content, resolve without action, or dismiss. Reporters get an in-app notification when their report leads to removal.

Each community has invite codes you control. Share one however you like (a flyer, an email blast, the existing group chat), neighbors sign up with it, and an admin approves them before they're in. And because every community runs on its own private, isolated database, your roster and conversations never mingle with any other community's. Approvals, roles, and removals all stay with your admins.

No platform fee from us. Dues and fees run through your HOA's own Stripe account, so only the standard card or bank processing fee applies. By default the association covers that cost, and the board can instead opt in to a small service fee shown to the resident at checkout, with bank payments always the lower-fee option. Debit cards never carry the service fee (card network rules do not allow it). The board also chooses which payment methods residents can use. We don't take a percentage of dues. Our subscription is the whole bill.

Yes. Annual billing is 9.5 times the monthly price, so you save about 21% compared to paying month to month, roughly two and a half months free. Same features on either cycle.

Yes. Set your community's colors and theme so it looks like yours, not ours. And for $5/month you can run it on your own custom domain (like community.yourhoa.org) instead of a neighbors.fyi subdomain.

Every community gets its own isolated database, a dedicated Supabase Postgres project, so one community's data never mingles with another's. Access is enforced at the database level with row-level security, stored credentials are encrypted, and we keep regular backups. Residents only ever see what their role allows.

Three ways: in the app, by browser push, and in a weekly email digest of what they missed (a daily option is available too). Every resident controls their own notification preferences from their profile, so the people who want quiet get quiet.

That describes most HOAs, and it's who we built for. There's nothing to install and nothing to configure: a resident opens the community link in whatever browser they already use, and they're in. The layout stays in plain language with the same words throughout, so the neighbors who "don't do apps" can still read the newsletter and RSVP to the picnic.

Email support@neighbors.fyi and a real person answers. There is also a built-in Academy with step-by-step tutorials for every feature, written in plain language, so admins and residents can usually find the answer without waiting on us.

Can’t find your answer? Contact us and a real person replies, usually the same day.
